The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor by Robert Kirkman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I am a huge The Walking Dead fan. It’s kind of ridiculous. I’ve read (and reread) all 92 issues of the continuing series of graphic novels, and I’ve watched every episode on AMC (the first half of season 2 twice.) So of course I had to read this. Also, I love villain stories. So I figured Rise of the Governor is a win-win.
And it was. It had everything I loved from the comics (of course, because Robert Kirkman wrote it.) And it elaborated on the development of a key character in the comics- The Governor- who we will undoubtedly also meet in the show.
Admittedly, because the main characters aren’t my favorite people, it’s not a completely addictive read. I had a little trouble empathizing because it’s not one of those stories that makes you reconsider your opinions on the villain. He’s still a villain. Kirkman doesn’t sugarcoat it. That said, it’s nice to understand the Governor’s past, even if we can’t completely and intimately understand him. I don’t think that was ever the intention.
A must-read for all The Walking Dead and zombie apocalypse fans. Actually, if you’re just into horror, you’ll probably like it.
