A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Summary:

The story follows Miriam and Laila, two very different women living, for the most part, in Kabul. Readers are given a glimpse into Afghanistan before, during, and after the Taliban reign, but we don’t see it from a political point of view. Instead, we see how these events affect people not unlike ourselves; children, women, parents, husbands. Miriam and Laila find themselves in very similar situations and each tries, desperately, to survive the war that surrounds them, out on the streets and in their own home.

Comments:

Excellent! I love this book. I thought it was better than Hosseini’s The Kite Runner and I even recommend it for a reread (which I rarely recommend because I don’t often have the patience to reread books.) I’ve written about Hosseini’s books here, too. Please check it out.

The Point:

A great read for anyone willing to explore how the struggles of a nation can become so entwined with the personal struggles of its citizens. Also for anyone curious to explore Afghanistan, its beauty, and its culture.
