RYAN’S REVIEW: Ryan talks and I write.

Summary:

What’s happening? Well, knighthood, magic, and a lot of drama. Who do we meet? A wise-cracking midget, a noble father, an illegitimate son out to prove his worth, a lost queen, a teenager lost in ignorance, a crippled boy, and at least a dozen others. Don’t forget the giant wolves called direwolves and even some dragons. The story essentially focuses on a dark force in the north that encroaches on a territory left to civil war. The rightful heir of this troubled land is overseas, quietly raising an army.

Comments:

Initially, Ryan wasn’t sure Martin had an adequate attention to detail. Something would seem amiss or even mistaken, but he soon learned that every gap is left intentionally and revisited in the subsequent books. The characters are deeply developed and remain true to themselves, but that doesn’t imply that they’re all predictable. In fact, Ryan’s assumptions on the ever-twisting plot were usually supplanted by other events that, when considered in hindsight, might have been foreseeable but in fact, were not. His only complaint is the vast amount of characters the reader must follow. It would sometimes take nine or ten chapters before returning to a certain character’s cliff-hanger.

The Point:

Ryan would recommend this series to anyone interested in the fantasy genre and of course, anyone interested in the Game of Thrones HBO television series. Although he hasn’t checked out the show yet, from what he’s heard, he gathers that the story stays fairly accurate to the books.

Books Ryan has read so far in this series:

Book One: A Game of Thrones

Book Two: A Clash of Kings

Book Three: A Storm of Swords

Book Four: A Feast for Crows
